Stalked UFOs amongst us!

Continuing with the fungal theme, here’s one I thought looked a lot like a flying saucer on a stalk (maybe eating them may have that effect!). Or one of those rides in a fairground. I’m not sure of the exact mushroom type but this may be a sort of milkcap.

A teeny tiny mushroom!

The rain and the damp here in East England has meant that there is a sudden explosion of mushrooms. Large and small, normal and strangely shaped, they’re all shooting up everywhere.. Here’s a tiny tiny mushroom that was shot at the closest approach I could make with my phone! I have selectively desaturated the background for emphasis.

Brandenburg Gate

A potent symbol of Germany and a poignant reminder of the Cold War and the division of a nation after the Second World War. For over 28 years, the Brandenburg gate was behind the wall in East Berlin.

Immediately after the war, one of few structures that remained standing amongst the ruins of Berlin was the Brandenburg Gate.

Sunset at the Seven Lakes

Seven Lakes drive is a road in the Hudson valley in New York state.. As the name implies the route passes by seven lakes in this forested region of the Harriman state park. This picture records sunset at Lake Tiorati.

Under the highway – Part 2

I experimented with pictures I took of the M25/A30 Runnymead bridge over the Thames using black-and-white conversion. The first two pictures are roughly from the same viewpoint and one of these is an exact copy of the earlier post.

The spans of the bridge distribute load and prevent vibrations from damaging the older Edwin Lutyens built A30 bypass bridge

The size of the arches are clearly evident in this image (my wife and son at the very top over the river)

Few places in the UK now seem free of people littering the place with graffiti and other detritus of modern living. The base of the bridge was littered with broken beer bottles and other unsavoury items, that destroyed an otherwise interesting scene of nature and modernity co-existing at this place. The Thames itself was tranquil and sedately flowed towards London en route to the sea towards the right of the pictures.

I used Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to process these images that came from my iPhone. I used the Black-and-White Strong Tonal Contrast Preset by Matt Kloskowski as a starting point before applying blue and green filter corrections to the images.

I hope you like the effects and I would love to hear your comments and suggestions..

Under the highway!!

The runnymead bridge on the notorious M25 motoway in London runs over the Thames near Staines. I wonder how many of the thousands of cars, vans and trucks that use the M25 daily have drivers who are aware of the river just beneath them.

The lines on this bridge were wonder to photograph, as were the effects of light reflecting from the Thames.

Wildflower Diaries – Sun spurge

Sun spurge (Euphorbiaceae) – highly poisonous

I bought myself a cheap and  tiny macro attachment for the iPhone. While it was nice being able to photograph details of flowers using this, the quality is as to be expected – both by the camera on the phone and quality of the attachment. Nonetheless, I will be using this more when I don’t want to be lugging a camera with me on a walk
