Cambridge in HDR – The Round Church

The Round Church in Cambridge is probably one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city.

Cambridge Round Church (12th century AD)

Dating from 1130AD, this is (according to the website) one of only 4 circular churches in England. It is now maintained by Christian Heritage. Not the easiest building to take a picture of, sitting as this is on a busy crossroad in the city. A lovely little church, well worth the visit for sheer character and history. Sundial – Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge

Gonville and Caius College – the fourth oldest college in Cambridge (Estd: 1348) has a very interesting six-sided sundial on one of the gates. The exact time I took this picture was 1:54PM GMT, and interestingly the sundial shows a time that is just an hour off.

Is this due to difference in local and GMT? Or was I looking at the wrong sundial? A later visit may answer that question.

Dog Rose – not just a rose for dogs!!

The name dog rose conjures up images either roses for dogs, or rose in the shape of dogs. This is neither! Dog rose or Rosa canina is a common species of climbing wild rose native to Europe.

The seeds (hips) of this rose are very rich in vitamin C and used in the preparation of  rose-hip tea (see my post Hip Hip Rose). As for the name of this rose, Wikipedia lists two possibilities – common or worthless or as a treatment for the bite from rabid dogs. I think the former is more likely etymology for this plant as it is genuinely common along hedgerows in England. The flowers are pink, have little or no fragrance.
